Nicola qualified as an Occupational Therapist in 2009 and has gained clinical experience in the UK and internationally. Since qualifying Nicola has specialised in adult complex brain injury and long term neurological conditions, therefore gaining extensive skills and knowledge in these specialist areas. As a Case Manager, Nicola works with adult clients who have sustained complex injuries such as traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury and other complex neurological conditions and polytrauma.

After qualifying as an Occupational Therapist, Nicola worked at one of the leading private brain injury rehabilitation units in the South East of England, where she worked as part of the multidisciplinary team providing rehabilitation to clients with complex acquired or traumatic brain injuries. Within this time, Nicola completed specialist training in the assessment and management of cognitive deficits and behavioural problems, and completed training in the assessment and provision of complex seating.

Nicola then joined the NHS as a Senior Specialist Occupational Therapist completing senior inpatient rotations in stroke, general medicine and cardiology. During this time Nicola managed a large caseload of complex clients providing clinical assessments and interventions to meet their complex needs, with the aim of achieving a safe discharge home.

Nicola relocated to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2012 where she helped to commission the first specialist neurological rehabilitation unit within the country. This involved working closely with the UAE government to write and implement the policies and standards in the provision of post-acute rehabilitation. Nicola managed therapy services within this 100-bed specialist rehabilitation hospital, providing specialist clinical guidance and treatment of patients who had a traumatic brain injury or neurological injury that required post-acute or slow stream rehabilitation. This role included overseeing patient care, quality of care, clinical outcomes and patient experience and expectations within the therapy service. Whilst working at the specialist neurological rehabilitation unit, Nicola also worked as a Case Manager to oversee the assessment and provision of care for clients, meeting the government’s new post-acute rehabilitation standards. During this time Nicola worked closely with clients referred from their own homes and acute care settings in ensuring they were provided with the correct care and rehabilitation to meet their clinical needs, whilst ensuring effective communication between all parties involved at every stage of their rehabilitation journey. During her time in the UAE Nicola had the opportunity to work in a variety of additional roles which included guest lecturer and board member for the Physiotherapy degree programme at Fatima College and Dietitian programme at United Arab Emirates University. Nicola has been able to share her expert skills and knowledge by presenting at a wide range of international conferences within the Mena region. Nicola has also obtained her Masters in International Healthcare Management and Leadership.

After returning to the UK in January 2021, Nicola has continued to specialise in complex brain injury, managing therapy services across 5 specialist brain injury units across the south of London. This role included working closely with funders including Health and Social Care, to ensure the assessment, planning and treatment of clients with complex brain injuries. Nicola oversees the effective and smooth communication between all parties involved in clinical care and rehabilitation.

Nicola is committed to continual learning and skill development. She is an active member of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), the Royal College of Occupational Therapy (RCOT) and the British Association of Brain Injury and Complex Case Management (BABICM).
