Helen is a qualified Physiotherapist with over 10 years of clinical experience both in the UK and internationally. She specialised in the field of neurological rehabilitation early on in her career and has since gained a vast array of experience within acute neurology and long-term conditions. As a Case Manager, Helen works with adults who have sustained complex injuries such as traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury and amputation. She is highly driven and passionate about helping people reach their full potential following life-changing events.
Following graduation, Helen worked within the NHS for 5 years in a variety of clinical settings including orthopaedics, neurology, paediatrics, intensive care and community rehabilitation. The latter part of her NHS experience was spent working as a Senior Physiotherapist with adults with neurological conditions such as brain injuries, multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injury. In addition to this, Helen taught aspects of neurological physiotherapy to undergraduates at London South Bank University.
Helen relocated to the United Arab Emirates in 2013 to further her career within neurological rehabilitation. She was tasked with commissioning the physiotherapy department in the country’s first licensed rehabilitation hospital. Here she worked with adults following traumatic brain injuries, often with catastrophic consequences such as the need for invasive ventilation. Helen gained specialist skills in 24 hour postural management, spasticity management, splinting and assistive and adaptive technologies. She worked closely with the multidisciplinary team to improve overall quality of life of hospital residents who were encouraged to engage in social and vocational activities to the best of their ability.
Helen later worked at the largest neurological and psychiatric outpatient clinic in Abu Dhabi in a dual role as Lead Physiotherapist and Clinical Coordinator. Here she gained further experience working with adults with long term neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis and brain injury. She implemented a number of cross-disciplinary clinics, such as the gait analysis and spasticity clinics to improve the management of people with complex presentations. In addition to her physiotherapy clinics, Helen worked as a Clinical Coordinator for a number of clinical programmes. This role involved performing initial comprehensive assessments and providing recommendations for ongoing management. Following this, Helen would ensure members of the multidisciplinary team worked collaboratively towards patient orientated care, including goal setting and developing effective communication channels.
During her time in Abu Dhabi, Helen had the opportunity to work in a variety of additional roles including as a Subject Matter Expert for the health authority licensing exams and as a physiotherapist to the UAE royal family. She has been invited to present on neurological physiotherapy management and the importance of coordinated care at numerous national and international conferences. Helen has also recently obtained a masters degree in Public Health with distinction.
Helen is committed to continual learning and skill development. She is an active member of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP), the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists Interested in Neurology (ACPIN) and the British Association of Brain Injury Case Managers (BABICM).
